A regional conference on the Global Development Network (GDN) was held in Hanoi by the Vietnamese Government and the World Bank with the participation of over 100 researchers and representatives of organisations operating in distance training.

GDN is a knowledge and co-operation network, set up in 2000 with a target of using technology and institution strength of the World Bank and partners to provide an effective development and knowledge sharing tool.

At the conference, many distance training models developed in many countries, such as China, Japan and Australia, were introduced. Tran Van Nhung, deputy minister of education and training, said that Vietnam would study and apply these models as Vietnam has a huge need for information technology-based distance training. In a distance training project, which has recently been approved, a target of 20 per cent of students joining the training model by 2010 has been set.

During the conference, the Ho Chi Minh City Distance Training Centre officially admitted to the GDN. Nguyen Thien Nhan, vice chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, said that the Ho Chi Minh City Development Training Centre would be a gate for Ho Chi Minh City to share experience with authorities and people in other cities and localities in the world.
