The overseas Vietnamese community in Sri Lanka on June 1 met to raise funds to support the coast guard forces who are performing their duties in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, where china has illegally placed Haiyang Shiyou-981 drilling rig.
At the meeting, Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Ton Sinh Thanh presented information on the situation in the East Sea and China’s illegal placement of drilling rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone to the overseas Vietnamese. The Ambassador stressed that Vietnam’s stance is determined to protect its national sovereignty by peaceful means.
In response to the appeal, the overseas Vietnamese community and staff of the Embassy raised LKR65,000.
Counselor Phung Trong Tuan, representative of the Vietnamese Embassy in Sri Lanka, received the donated funds and will transfer the sum to the homeland as soon as possible to encourage the coast guards on duty in the East Sea.
At the meeting, the community also elected a liaison committee for the tenure of 2014-2016, including eight members./.
